MDH Earns Another “A” Hospital Safety Grade

MACOMB, Ill. – McDonough District Hospital earned another “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety.

Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

MDH is one of 35 hospitals across the state of Illinois to receive an “A” grade for Spring 2025.

During the past two grading periods, MDH did not receive a grade due to not meeting The Leapfrog Group’s testing criteria due to the size of the hospital compared to larger healthcare systems. After Leapfrog changed the minimum numbers, MDH met the requirements and scored at the “A” grade level again. This is the seventh time MDH has earned an “A” dating back to Fall 2017.

“We were disappointed the last two Leapfrog grading periods didn’t meet their minimums. We believed we would have been in contention for an “A” grade based off our safety scores. We were very excited to get word that we were receiving an “A” grade for Spring 2025,” said MDH President & Chief Executive Officer Bill Murdock. “Few hospitals in the state of Illinois, let alone the United States, can say they earned the top grade for The Leapfrog Group hospital safety criteria.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“This honor represents the great pride all our MDH staff members take in providing the highest quality care for patients in west-central Illinois and the tri-state area. We are here to meet our patients’ needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We offer a wide range of testing capabilities and services so patients don’t always have to leave Macomb for their healthcare needs,” said Murdock. “We encourage all patients to review The Leapfrog Group’s public website for hospital safety grades to see how MDH compares against other hospitals in the region.”

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to McDonough District Hospital, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”
