Three Straight “A” Grades for Hospital Safety

MACOMB, Ill. – Make it three straight A’s.

McDonough District Hospital earned its third consecutive “A” Grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, as announced Wednesday (November 16). This national distinction for Fall 2022 celebrates MDH’s achievements in protecting hospital patients from preventable harm and error.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization with a 10-year history of assigning letter grades to general hospitals throughout the United States, based on a hospital’s ability to prevent medical errors and harm to patients.

MDH was part of the 29 percent nationally earning an “A” grade in Fall 2022.

Only 23 hospitals in the state of Illinois earned three consecutive “A” grades over the last three grading periods. In fact, MDH ranks among the 20 percent of hospitals nationally to score three straight A’s. This marks the second time that MDH has earned three consecutive “A” grades in recent years (Fall 2017-Spring 2018-Fall 2018).

“We are very proud of our third consecutive Leapfrog ‘A’ Safety Grade,” said MDH Chief Medical Officer Edwin Card, MD. “This (Fall 2022 'A' Grade) is awarded to the top 29 percent of hospitals across the United States. This reflects all of the hard work put in by all departments of the hospital. It also reflects our ongoing commitment to providing safe and effective care for our neighbors and friends.”

The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring.

“I applaud the hospital leadership and workforce for their strong commitment to safety and transparency,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a sign that hospitals are continuously evaluating their performance, so that they can best protect patients. Your hospital team should be extremely proud of their dedication and achievement.”
