MACOMB, Ill. – McDonough District Hospital earned the highest national distinction for patient safety following an announcement by The Leapfrog Group. An ‘A’ grade was awarded to MDH based on its performance in preventing medical errors, infections, and other harms while recognizing its commitment to keeping patients safe and meeting the highest safety standards in the United States.
Leapfrog’s ‘A’ patient safety grade marks the third national recognition earned by MDH this calendar year.
Earlier this year, McDonough District Hospital was recognized as a ‘Top 100 Rural and Community Hospital’ by Beckers Hospital Review, and also a ‘Most Wired’ Small and Rural Hospital by the American Hospital Association’s Health Forum.
A national nonprofit health care ratings organization, The Leapfrog Group assigns safety letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals nationwide based on their performance. Developed under the guidance of a Blue Ribbon National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publically available hospital safety data to assign the letter grades to more than 2,600 hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
MDH President/CEO Kenny Boyd credited his entire staff for their continued work in helping earn Leapfrog’s ‘A’ grade.
“Receiving the top Safety Letter Grade from The Leapfrog Group demonstrates our entire hospital staff’s focus and dedication to patient safety,” said Boyd. “The prestigious award does not evaluate a single individual or department but our entire health care unit. I am extremely proud to announce our ‘A’ grade, this award is one every MDH employee can take pride in receiving.”
MDH was one of 832 hospitals across the country to earn an ‘A’ grade during the Fall 2017 period.
“It takes consistent, unwavering dedication to patients to achieve the highest standards of patient safety. An ‘A’ Safety Grade recognizes hospitals for this accomplishment,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the clinicians, Board of Directors, management and staff of McDonough District Hospital for showing the country what it means to put patient safety first.”
