Two Consecutive “A” Grades for Hospital Safety

MACOMB, Ill. – McDonough District Hospital received its second consecutive “A” Grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, as announced Tuesday (May 10). This national distinction for Spring 2022 recognizes MDH’s achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and error in the hospital.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A”, “B”, “C”, “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, injuries, accidents and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

MDH was part of the 33 percent nationally earning an “A” grade.

MDH is one of only 27 hospitals in the state of Illinois to earn two consecutive “A” grades over the last two grading periods.

“Receiving another ‘A’ Grade from The Leapfrog Group demonstrates the ongoing commitment of everyone in McDonough District Hospital to provide safe care and to maintain the highest standards,” said MDH Chief Medical Officer Edwin Card, MD. “Receiving this award takes an incredible amount of work put in by all of the staff. We are very proud of this achievement and are working diligently to try to maintain this level of excellence.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“As our healthcare system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of McDonough District Hospital for sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire healthcare workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”
