MACOMB, Ill. – Make that two straight ‘A’ grades for McDonough District Hospital. After earning its first-ever ‘A’ grade from The Leapfrog Group last fall, MDH repeated in receiving the highest national distinction for patient safety.

The Leapfrog Group announced the Spring 2018 Safety Grades on Tuesday (April 24). MDH was one of 750 hospitals from across the United States to earn an ‘A’, and one of 37 from across the state of Illinois. In fact, MDH is just one of 23 Illinois hospitals to earn a repeat ‘A’ grade (Fall 2017/Spring 2018).

“Earning The Leapfrog Group’s ‘A’ grade for patient safety last fall demonstrated our entire hospital staff’s focus and dedication to our patients. No one became complacent after receiving that honor. I’m extremely proud of our staff working even harder to make sure we repeated our ‘A’ grade this spring,” said MDH President/CEO Kenny Boyd. “This is a prestigious recognition from The Leapfrog Group. A thorough evaluation of our entire health care unit, resulting in our second consecutive ‘A’ grade, is something every MDH employee should be proud to be associated with.”

An ‘A’ grade was awarded to MDH based on its efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the United States. The Leapfrog Group assigns safety letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care.

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to approximately 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

“This is the only national rating of how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm and death, such as medical errors, infections and injuries,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Receiving an ‘A’ Safety Grade means a hospital is among the best in the country for preventing these terrible problems and putting their patients first, 24 hours a day.”
