Keep Care Close to Home
Imaging Modernization Project
McDonough District Hospital is committed to ensuring patients and families throughout our region continue to have access to high-quality healthcare close to home. Through the Keep Care Close to Home: Imaging Modernization Project, the MDH Foundation is raising funds to modernize essential diagnostic imaging technology that supports patients across our rural communities.
This project will replace our aging fluoroscopy system, add a portable imaging unit, and transition from a costly leased MRI arrangement to a more permanent MRI system. Together, these upgrades are critical to sustaining access to safe, modern, high-quality diagnostic care close to home.
As an independent rural hospital, MDH faces ongoing financial pressures related to reimbursement, workforce recruitment, and rising operational costs, making major capital investments difficult to fund locally despite their importance to patient care. Replacing our fluoroscopy system will improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce radiation exposure. A portable imaging unit will strengthen emergency and bedside care capabilities, while purchasing a permanent MRI system will help stabilize long-term costs and ensure consistent access to advanced imaging services for our community.
Why It Matters
This modernization effort will:
- Preserve local access to advanced diagnostic imaging
- Reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for care
- Strengthen emergency, surgical, and outpatient services
- Support recruitment and retention of clinical staff
- Improve patient safety and operational efficiency
- Ensure access to modern healthcare technology in rural western Illinois
Fluoroscopy System
A fluoroscopy system provides live, real-time X-ray imaging that helps physicians diagnose conditions and guide procedures with greater precision and safety.
This technology:
- Provides moving, real-time images inside the body
- Helps physicians diagnose conditions more quickly and accurately
- Supports orthopedic, gastrointestinal, pain management, and emergency services
- Assists with swallowing studies and digestive system evaluations
- Helps providers view joints, bones, organs, and medical devices during treatment
- Improves patient care and access to advanced imaging close to home
