Level II Obstetrics Department
As a Level II Obstetrics Department, our highly trained and experienced staff provides 24-hour care before, during, and after your baby is born. From pregnancy through childbirth and beyond, McDonough District Hospital can provide you and your family with the care you need for a healthy beginning. MDH recognizes your choice for a healthcare provider is an important decision. Whether you choose an OB/GYN, or a nurse midwife for prenatal care and delivery, you are assured excellent, personal care. In addition, MDH has a certified pediatric and neonatal nurse practitioner on staff to provide care for newborns through age 18.
Nurse Navigator
As any expectant parent knows, the anticipation of giving birth can be both exciting and overwhelming. To help offset some of those apprehensions, we have developed an OB Nurse Navigator program. This new program helps parents-to-be feel confident and comfortable before delivery day arrives by adding an extra layer of one-on-one care for pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care.
Certified Lactation Counselors
The Certified Lactation Counselor® (CLC) certification is the premier National Certification in Lactation Management for the United States. CLC certification holders have demonstrated competence in the lactation skills, knowledge and attitudes that are essential to helping women in the United States, and have agreed to comply with The Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice code of ethics. The Lactation Counselor Training course is recognized by ANCC as a Nursing Skills Competency Program.
CLC certification means that a person has received training and competency verification in breastfeeding and human lactation support, including: assessing the latching and feeding process, providing corrective interventions, counseling mothers, understanding and applying knowledge of milk production including in special circumstances, and other commonly encountered situations. All of this give CLC's a strong foundation with which to help moms and babies.
Award Winning Obstetrics Department
McDonough District Hospital is proud to be recognized by the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative (ILPQC) Illinois Birthing Hospital Quality Designation Program as a recipient of the 2025 Illinois Birthing Hospital Quality Excellence Award.
To earn this designation, each facility must demonstrate achievement of all of the following:
- active participation in ILPQC initiatives
- meaningful engagement of patient partners with obstetric QI teams
- engagement of community partners such as doulas and home visiting programs to improve patient access to community services
- engaging patients and community partners to attend Respectful Care Breakfasts with clinical staff to promote equitable and respectful obstetric care
- data-driven improvements in reducing disparities in low-risk first time cesarean rates
- screening for social needs and linking obstetric patients to needed community resources
- integration of quality improvement practices into clinical care.
“We are honored to receive this $20,000 ILPQC designation grant. It reinforces the exceptional work our team puts into advancing safe, high-quality care for mothers and infants,” said MDH Director of Obstetrics Melissa Onion, RN, BSN, CLC. “Their passion drives continuous improvement, and I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished and what we will continue to achieve for our community.”
“ILPQC is committed to supporting birthing hospitals’ quality improvement work to equitably improve outcomes for moms and babies across Illinois,” said Dr. Ann Borders, Executive Director and OB Clinical Lead at ILPQC. “We are proud to recognize birthing hospitals that are working to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in quality maternal care.”
Personal Touches
Onesie & Welcome Board – Our nurse navigators form a bond with our OB patients. They spend 9 months getting to know them and become their personal guide for pregnancy. Our nurses want to celebrate with the new moms too. The will deliver the onesie and a personal note to each patient after delivery or at the first postpartum check. The Welcome Baby Board gives parents a personalized backdrop to share details of their little one’s birthday!
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
The Southern Illinois University (SIU) Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) team, led by Dr. Abrams, has been providing services for MDH high-risk OB patients at their Springfield location, but are now offering telehealth services at MDH in the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic. Patients that do not need to be seen in-person by a MFM Specialist at SIU can be seen here at MDH. SIU MFM telehealth appointments are by physician referral and are offered twice a month. According to Dr. Nicholas Viyuoh, OBGYN, “This will provide patients the convenience of maternal-fetal medicine services closer to home. We are excited for this opportunity to better serve our patients."
Celebration Meal
We want the new parent’s time in our Labor & Delivery department to be warm and welcoming. We also want to celebrate them and their new baby. We have begun offering a Celebration Dinner to celebrate the new mom and her guest with a special dinner after the baby is born. We offer several entrees including steak as well as sparkling cider in champagne flutes to share with a special someone.

Doulas Welcome at MDH
Patients enrolled in Illinois Medicaid may arrange to have their own Illinois Medicaid-certified and enrolled doula to support them before, during, and after labor and childbirth at our hospital. This doula does not count against your normal support person limits.
Doulas are not provided by MDH and are not hospital employees or agents. Credentialed doulas are welcome at the hospital but you will need to arrange for one yourself. Your doula should bring photo ID and written proof of Illinois Medicaid doula certification and provider enrollment. Doulas must follow all hospital policies and procedures applicable to other visitors.
Access to certain areas (e.g., operating room) is based on clinical discretion. Access to you may be limited at times based on the medical judgment of your healthcare team. Doulas may provide non-clinical support only (e.g. comfort measures, breathing/relaxation coaching, emotional support, etc.). Credentialed doulas do not count against your visitor limit in the labor and delivery or postpartum unit.
