MACOMB, Ill. – The diabetes self-management education service of the Diabetes Education Center at McDonough District Hospital has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The MDH program originally earned recognition in October 2002 and has since been continuously re-awarded the honor as a program that offers high-quality education as an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.

The ADA Education Recognition effort, begun in the fall of 1986, is a voluntary process which assures approved education services have met the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Services. Programs achieve recognition by having a staff of knowledgeable health professionals to provide up-to-date information about diabetes management to participants.

Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. Complying with these national standards ensures greater consistency in the quality and quantity of education offered. Patients of the MDH Diabetes Education Center will be taught, as needed, self-care skills to promote better management of the disease and treatment regimen.

“The recognition program gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of service they provide,” comments Janene Shockency, Nurse Educator at MDH. “And it assures the consumer that he or she will receive high-quality service.”

According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 30.3 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and 84.1 million have pre-diabetes, or an elevated blood sugar level that is likely to progress to type 2 diabetes without making lifestyle changes. Every year 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with the disease, yet more than 7.2 million of these people are unaware they have it.

The Diabetes Education Center at MDH helps provide tools to successfully manage diabetes by providing a comprehensive education program customized to address individualized needs. Education sessions are scheduled by appointment and provided on a fee-per-visit basis.

Medicare and most insurance companies will cover MDH’s instruction with a doctor’s order. For more information contact MDH Diabetes Education Center at (309) 836-1634 or visit www.MDH.org.
