Community Health Education

Community education is a building block of the Business Development mission. Our staff provides education and screenings to a variety of audiences on many health topics. We can and have presented on everything from breast cancer to heart healthy diet to information about the new healthcare law.

We tailor presentations to your unique needs whether you are an organization, employer, or community group. Our goal is to provide you with the education and services you need. To learn more about what services we can off you call our office at (309) 836-1584.

We have worked with many local groups to provide screenings, education, and First Aid/CPR classes. We have given screenings at everything from health fairs and employer open houses to community events.

Educational Classes

Community CPR Class

This course is taught by instructors trained through the American Heart Association on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Basic life support concepts and techniques are taught and demonstrated, with 2-year certification granted upon successful completion. Reviews and re-certifications are also available. This class will teach you what to do if an adult, child, or infant chokes, stops breathing, or experiences cardiac arrest. Two separate courses are offered: “Heartsaver,” for the layperson, and “Healthcare Provider,” for healthcare professionals.

The cost is $50 and pre-registration is required. A minimum of 6 participants is necessary for a class to be held. All CPR Classes begin at 6 p.m.; MDH Auditoriums A & B, Auxiliary Workroom & Conference Room. Anyone having special needs should give advance notice when pre-registering for the class.

Individuals also have the option to complete the following courses at www.elearning.heart.org:

  • BLS CPR
  • Heartsaver CPR AED
  • Heartsaver First Aid

Once participants have received a certificate of completion from an online course, they can contact MDH Outreach Services staff directly to schedule a one-on-one skill check off; the fee is $30.

CPR classes are available upon request for businesses or organizations with 10 or more participants. Pricing subject to change.

Community First Aid Class

This course is facilitated by MDH instructors trained through the American Heart Association. This class covers injury assessment, first aid techniques and safety/injury prevention. Course completion cards are valid for 2 years. The cost is $50. For more information, contact MDH Staff Development at (309) 836-1751. First Aid classes are available upon request for businesses and organizations. Pricing subject to change July 1.

Diabetes Education Group

Class will include nutrition instruction, self-management education, and goal setting. Cost may be billable to insurance; verify coverage with your insurance or talk with the MDH Financial Assistance Office for programs available to help defer cost of education.
