What
is Hemodialysis?
Hemodialysis is the process of cleansing a person's blood
because their kidneys no longer function properly. When functioning
normally, the kidneys filter out waste products from the blood
in the form of urine, stimulate the body to produce red blood
cells, release hormones that help regulate growth and blood
pressure and keep bones healthy. When the kidneys fail to
perform those life-sustaining tasks, a person faces two options:
transplant or dialysis.
During
hemodialysis, needles are placed into a patient's vein and
artery and blood is drawn through a machine acting as an artificial
kidney. The artificial kidney machine cleanses the blood and
returns it to the patient. The process normally needs to be
done three times a week and can take four hours to complete.
