Our Team
The Rehabilitation team at MDH provides services for people of all ages. Our highly trained staff with years of clinical experience includes physical and occupational therapists, exercise physiologists, registered nurses, speech pathologists, and certified athletic trainers.
Our Services
A wide range of rehabilitation services and therapies tailored to meet individual needs are available at McDonough District Hospital. Patients in need of therapy after an injury, surgery, or illness can take advantage of evaluation and treatment by MDH Rehabilitation Services. Upon referral from your physician, your therapist will perform a thorough evaluation and develop an individualized treatment program to address your specific needs to increase function and promote wellness.
Inpatient
Hospital-based therapy is provided 7 days a week.

Outpatient
Rehabilitation Services for outpatients are provided at two convenient locations: the lower level of the hospital and the Outpatient Rehabilitation Services facility located on the corner of University Drive and Route 67.

MDH Cardiac Rehabilitation provides a program of exercise and education to help people with heart conditions live to their fullest potential.
Conditions Treated
The main conditions that we treat are open heart surgery (CABG), heart attack (MI), and stable angina. Additional cardiac conditions may be covered.
Elements of Treatment
We offer options to fit your specific needs at different times during your recovery. Phase I is our inpatient treatment. Phase II is an 8- to 12-week physician-ordered program after release from the hospital. Phase III provides the opportunity for you to continue your personalized workout in our facility at your own pace for a nominal fee.

Goal
Our primary goal is to help the participant gain strength and endurance following open heart surgery, heart attack, or stable angina. Our long-term goal is to offer direction in risk factor modification and positive lifestyle change.
MDH Industrial Rehabilitation is a program that offers specialized services to address the needs associated with work-related activities and injuries.
Conditions Treated
We provide assistance with injuries that happen on the job. The most common of these are back injuries, shoulder injuries, knee injuries, as well as wrist and hand injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome.

Goal
The goal of Industrial Rehabilitation is to prevent work-related injuries and return the injured worker to productive employment as soon as possible.
MDH Occupational Therapists evaluate and treat patients of all ages with health problems resulting from illness or injury, including multiple sclerosis, stroke, arthritis, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, hand injuries, developmental disabilities, and more. MDH Occupational Therapists see inpatients, outpatients, and Home Health patients.
Conditions Treated
We offer treatment for many conditions, including orthopedic conditions (fractures, nerve injury, tendon repairs, work injuries, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, RSD), developmental disabilities, and neurological disorders (CVA, head injury, MS, spinal cord injury).

- Evaluation by our experienced therapists
- Therapeutic exercise
- Modalities to decrease the pain and promote healing. These include paraffin, fluidotherapy, ultrasound, iontophoresis, electrical stimulation, heat, and ice.
- Wheelchair fitting

- Hand therapy and splinting (custom static/dynamic splinting)
- Sensory integration
- Lymphedema evaluation and treatment
- Ergonomic evaluation and adaptation
Goal
The goal of Occupational Therapy is to help patients achieve independence and lead productive and satisfying lives. Our therapists work closely with patients to customize treatment programs that help them function at work and at home.
MDH Physical Therapy provides both inpatient and outpatient skilled services for patients of all ages. Our focus is function. We will individualize each program based on your specific needs.
Conditions Treated
We treat patients with a variety of diagnoses. Some of the most common are orthopedic surgeries, total joint replacements, balance disorders, problems with ambulation (walking), back and neck pain, and shoulder pain.
Elements of Treatment
- Evaluation: One of our caring, experienced therapists will determine the appropriate course of treatment for you and your condition.
- Manual Therapy/Exercises: Hands-on treatment and instruction in the clinic and for home.
- Modalities: These treatments are used to decrease pain and promote healing. They include paraffin, fluidotherapy, ultrasound, iontophoresis, electrical stimulation, heat, ice, and Anodyne therapy.
- Ongoing Support: Our graduates have the option to continue using our facility for a nominal fee.
Goal
Whatever the course of treatment, our main goal at MDH Physical Therapy is helping you resume your normal activities. For example, if you have a knee injury and want to get back to playing sports, we will work on activities specific to your sport. Or, if you have a knee replacement and want to return to walking in the community, we will work on exercises to improve your strength and endurance so you can walk safely.
MDH Pulmonary Rehabilitation offers patients with obstructive or restrictive pulmonary disease an 8- to 12-week, multidisciplinary rehabilitation program combining education, exercise, and functional activities.
Conditions Treated
We provide evaluation and treatment of many lung conditions, including COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, emphysema, lung cancer, asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other lung diseases.
Elements of Treatment
- Evaluation and Testing: Pulmonary function test and the 6-minute walk test
- Exercise: Aerobic, strengthening, and stretching
- Education Sessions: Includes educational materials
Goal
Our goal is to improve aerobic conditioning, increase upper and lower body strength, establish good breathing techniques, and improve your function in everyday activities.
Speech-Language Pathology provides evaluation and therapy services to patients from birth to older adults. We specialize in swallowing disorders, including those of infants and children as well as adults, utilizing state-of-the-art radiological techniques. We also provide speech and language therapy (especially after stroke or traumatic brain injury), voice therapy, and cognitive retraining.
Conditions Treated
We have expertise in treating swallowing disorders (dysphagia), speech disorders, language disorders, cognitive-linguistic disorders, developmental delays, voice disorders, chewing difficulties, alternative communication needs, facial muscle weakness, dysarthria, apraxia, aphasia, and communication needs associated with laryngeal cancer.
Elements of Treatment
- Newborn/Pediatrics (swallowing/feeding difficulties, delayed language, articulation deficits, phonological disorders, speech delays)
- Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies
- Neurological Rehabilitation (stroke, brain injury)
- Alaryngeal Speech Training (electrolarynx, esophageal speech, voice prosthesis fitting and training)
- Speaking valves for tracheostomy patients and ventilator patients with tracheostomy
- Electrical stimulation for facial weakness from CVA, Bell’s Palsy, hypotonia (adult), and oral dysphagia
- Deep Pharyngeal Neuromuscular Stimulation (DPNS) for pharyngeal dysphagia
Goals
Our goal is for patients to have the most natural and independent abilities to communicate, eat, drink, produce voice, and/or think in order to function in their everyday lives.
Sports medicine, or athletic training, deals with the treatment and preventative care of athletes and anyone who participates in leisure sports.
Conditions Treated
We can assist you with sports injuries, including ligament injuries, meniscus, rotator cuff, ankle sprains, and general musculoskeletal injuries.
We also offer high school and junior high school coverage for injury evaluations, strength and conditioning, sports rehabilitation, bracing, and exercise testing.
Goals
The goal of Sports Medicine is to increase the range of motion, control pain, increase strength, and return patient to prior level of activity. |
