Digital Mammography Suite

MDH has added digital mammography to women's health diagnostic services. The newly remodeled mammography suite in the Radiology department features the Selenia™ digital mammography system from Hologic®....the most advanced technology available...right here in Macomb.
Mammograms play a central part in the early detection of breast cancer because they can detect changes in the breast that are too small or subtle to be felt, but may be early signs of cancer.

Selenia™ provides high quality breast images that allow the technologist to zoom in for close-ups of specific areas of interest and even adjust brightness and contrast. This advanced imaging is the latest technology in the fight against breast cancer.

With digital mammography, the radiologist reviews electronic images of the breast, using special high resolution medical monitors. Being able to manipulate images is one of the main benefits of digital technology. Digital mammograms are especially advantageous for women who have dense breast tissue, are under the age of 50, or are pre-menopausal.

Another convenience of digital mammography over film-based systems is it can greatly reduce the need for retakes due to over or under exposure. This potentially saves additional time and reduces exposure to x-rays. Digital mammography images can be transmitted quickly across electronic networks. Digital images are easily stored, copied without loss of information, and transmitted and received in a more streamlined manner, eliminating dependence on 'original' films.

During 2009, nearly $112,000 was raised in support of the purchase of digital mammography equipment. This was made possible through generous community donations from the MDH Golf Tournament, Festival of Trees event, Business Honor Roll, and Century Club Drive.

Donations have also made it possible for qualifying patients to receive financial assistance for mammograms through the Mammography Assistance Program (MAP). Linda's Fund was established in memory of Linda Ren Bainter to assist breast cancer patients with medical bills not covered by insurance and related expenses.  For more information about these funds or to make a contribution, contact the MDH Public Relations and Fund Development office at 309.836.1557.

For more information about mammography, or to schedule a screening mammogram, please contact the Radiology Department at 309.836.1550.

As a Pink Ribbon Facility, MDH is proud to join other facilities across the country that share an important commitment to raising the standard of care by providing every woman who comes to us with a digital mammography exam.
