Outpatient Radiology Imaging Suite (x-ray capabilities)
Opens March 14, 2022

2nd Floor - Health Services Building 1
Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

McDonough District Hospital focuses on technology to offer you the best in medical imaging. Digital images are viewed using the Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) and Digital Radiography (DR) to distribute imaging information and provide a wide range of radiology services.

Radiologists located at MDH are employed by REMLO.

Diagnostic imaging is often the first exam ordered by a provider. It can visualize most parts of the body and allow for more accurate testing and diagnosis. General radiology uses a small amount of radiation to view the skull, chest, abdomen, spine, pelvis, and upper and lower extremities. More specialized imaging such as Computed Tomography (CT) and fluoroscopy use contrast material that can either be ingested and/or injected. These contrasts better define structures such as kidneys and blood vessels, colon, stomach and more.

New Radiology Imaging Suite Opens Inside HSB 1

A new facility addition at McDonough District Hospital provides additional access to outpatients needing an x-ray. MDH will now offer outpatient x-rays inside the Radiology Imaging Suite located on the second floor of Health Services Building 1 (505 East Grant Street). The new Radiology Imaging Suite is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

“The new outpatient Radiology suite will allow outpatients to receive x-ray examinations without coming inside the hospital,” said Director of MDH Radiology Milton Griffin, RT (R), BS, MA. “The convenience will be a major patient satisfier.”

The Radiology Imaging Suite is available to any outpatient needing an x-ray examination.

Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study

A Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS) allows the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to see what occurs in your mouth and throat when you swallow. This test lets the SLP see:

  • if food enters your airway instead of your stomach, called aspiration
  • which parts of your mouth and throat may not work well
  • what kinds of food are safest for you to swallow
  • if certain positions or strategies help to improve your swallow

This study is completed in the radiology department with the SLP, radiologist, and a radiology technician. The SLP will give you different foods and drinks mixed with barium. The test results will determine what treatment will improve your swallowing and what foods and liquids are safest to swallow.

In order to complete the VFSS, you must discuss your concerns with your doctor and have a physician’s orders faxed to (309) 836-1586. Once the order is sent, please call the Radiology Department at (309) 836-1550 to schedule the evaluation.

If you have any questions and/or concerns, please feel free to contact the Speech Therapy Department of MDH Rehabilitation Services at (309) 836-1601.
