Food
& Nutrition
Food/Nutrition Services provides daily inpatient meals and
supplemental nourishments along with a full spectrum of age-
and disease-specific nutrition care services. These services
include, as appropriate: screening, assessment, nutrition
support, consultations, and education. Nutrition education
focuses on the needs of the patient in the home environment,
including family and caregivers. Those services are provided
in cooperation with physicians, pharmacists, nursing personnel,
social workers, rehabilitation therapists and other healthcare
providers.
Registered
Dietitians (R.D.) are licensed or licensure-eligible in Illinois
and maintain registration or registration-eligible status
with the American Dietetic Association. Food Service Techs
have completed Dietary Manager Association course work and
may have achieved Certified Dietary Manger (CDM) requirements.
Food Service Supervisors are trained in the principles and
practice of nutrition care, including screening and evaluation,
normal nutrition, modified diets, and texture modification.
All R.D.s, Techs, and Supervisors have IDPH Food Service Sanitation
Certification, as do the majority of all staff members in
Food/Nutrition Services.
The Food/Nutrition
Services Department is staffed every day to provide inpatient
meals, supplements and menu selection services, as well as
nutrition risk screening and evaluation, and education. Supervisors
and Techs are provided with criteria to determine when to
contact an R.D. on call if an R.D. is not on duty.
While
you are a patient, your doctor will prescribe the type of
diet you'll receive during your hospital stay.
Meals
are served at approximately the following times:
- Breakfast
- 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
- Lunch
- 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Dinner
- 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
For most
meal plans, you will receive a menu on your breakfast tray
from which to select the next day's meals. A Registered Dietitian
or Dietary Supervisor may assist you with your menu selections,
if needed.
In addition,
a Registered Dietitian will review your laboratory results
to determine your nutritional status upon admission with notification
and consultation by your doctor as indicated.
The
cafeteria, coin cafe and vending area
The cafeteria provides dining services for MDH outpatients,
visitors and employees. It is located on the lower level near
the elevators. The new scatter design will provide faster
services for visitors and staff. Cafeteria hours are 6 a.m.
to 7 p.m., seven days a week. A
vending area with soft drinks, sandwiches, and snack items
is also located on the lower level near the elevators and
offers 24-hour service.
