Food & Nutrition Services

While you are a patient, your doctor will prescribe the type of diet you'll receive during your hospital stay. Food/Nutrition Services provides daily inpatient meals and supplemental nourishments along with a full spectrum of age- and disease-specific nutrition care services. These services include, as appropriate: screening, assessment, nutrition support, consultations, and education.

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are licensed or licensure-eligible in Illinois and maintain registration or registration-eligible status with the American Dietetic Association. Food Service Techs have completed Dietary Manager Association course work and may have achieved Certified Dietary Manager (CDM) requirements. Food Service Supervisors are trained in the principles and practice of nutrition care, including screening and evaluation, normal nutrition, modified diets, and texture modification. All RDs, Techs, and Supervisors have IDPH Food Service Sanitation Certification. Supervisors and Techs are provided with criteria to determine when to contact an RD on call if an RD is not on duty.

Meals are served at approximately the following times:

  • Breakfast: 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
  • Lunch: 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Dinner: 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

For most meal plans, you will receive a menu on your breakfast tray from which to select the next day's meals. A Registered Dietitian or Dietary Supervisor may assist you with your menu selections, if needed.

In addition, an RD will review your laboratory results to determine your nutritional status upon admission with notification and consultation by your doctor as indicated.
