McDonough District Hospital Receives Environmental Award

McDonough District Hospital recently received a 2009 Environmental Award from Cintas document management in recognition of MDH’s program of shredding paper records and recycling.

Every Monday representatives from Cintas pick up shredded paper from the hospital and transport it to the Lake Area Recycling Services, Springfield, IL, where it is compacted into 2,000 pound bales and shipped to a paper mill for production of a recycled paper product. The paper shredding program satisfies health care and personal privacy standards for the destruction of records and promotes environmental conservation.

During 2009 MDH recycled slightly more than 43 tons of paper. The Cintas program reports each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper saves: 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 7000 gallons of water and three cubic yards of landfill space. In 2009 MDH was credited for saving 733 trees; 16,388 gallons of oil; 301,875 gallons of water; and 129 cubic yards of landfill space.
