MDH Recognizes Specialty Nurse Certification
Darlene Row, RN, BSN, a Home Health Care employee at McDonough District Hospital, has successfully completed the national board examination to become a Certified Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse (CWOCN). In addition to the intensive examination, nurses must have clinical experience, and meet rigorous criteria from an accredited program. Certification provides validation of specialized knowledge, skills, and expertise of an experienced nurse.
The CWOCN provides specialty care, in collaboration with a patient’s physician, to meet the acute and rehabilitative needs of patients. They are trained to assess and determine the cause of the wound and identify appropriate treatment options; introduce techniques to prevent pressure ulcers and other wounds from developing; and educate families, patients, and nursing staff about strategies to optimize wound healing. Specific conditions which are treated include abdominal stomas, fistulas, chronic or non-healing wounds, drains, pressure ulcers, and continence disorders. The CWOCN plays a pivotal role in the healthcare team by contributing to optimal patient care and the outcomes they experience.
McDonoughDistrict Hospitalis fortunate to have a second CWOCN, Carolyn Grove, RN, BSN, who has been certified for 5 years and provides services for inpatients and outpatients at MDH.
“We are pleased to be able to provide this unique service to our patients,” said Marcia McGrew, Director of MDH Home Health and Hospice. “Our Home Health team provides care to many types of patients, many of whom will benefit from having Darlene available to make a visit, consult with a nurse, go with a patient to a physician’s appointment, and assist with the transition from hospital to home. Since we also have Carolyn to consult with inpatients and outpatients, we have an excellent continuity of care system in place for our community.
