TEVAR EVENT SUPPORTS CANCER AWARNESS
More than 150 individuals participated in the October 3 McDonough District Hospital Dr. Dinesh Tevar 5K run, 1-mile run/walk and 10 mile bicycle ride to raise more than $4,000 to benefit cancer screening and support. The run/walk/roll was held in conjunction with the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development Corporation’s (MACCDDC) Paint the Town Pink breast cancer awareness event.
In the 5K competitive run Adam Ludwig was the overall male top finisher with a time of 21:59. Pam Hoon completed the course in 24:22 for the best finish by a female participant overall. First place in other age divisions for men were Tim Money, 14 and under; Jack Fischer, 20-24; Brian Snowden, 25-29; Jeremy Kane, 30-34; Jon Harper, 35-39; Sean Cordes, 45-49; Bill Poncin, 55-59; John Simmons, 60-64; and Dennis Werling, 65 and over. The run/walk was initiated in 2006 to honor Dr. Dinesh Tevar, a general surgeon who served on the MDH Medical Staff for many years before passing away in 2003. Combined with the MACCDDC activities, proceeds from the event are used to support awareness and education programs for breast cancer detection and treatment. The Tevar family has supported the event as a way to recognize their father’s compassion for Macomb and MDH.
Paint the Town Pink included the second Pink Porches event with participants using pink light bulbs and other decorations to bring awareness to breast cancer. Chamber gift certificate prizes were awarded for decorations to Brenda Hance, first place; Jean Wolf, second place; and Jackie Foxall, third place. Proceeds from the sale of pink bulbs will be donated to cancer education funds at MDH. The bulbs were sold through the McDonough County Health Department, Western Illinois Regional Council, Women’s Center at Western Illinois University and MACCDDC.
Other Paint the Town Pink events Oct. 3 included a fashion show, Girl Scout troop sale of pink items and participation of other organizations at Farmer’s Market. Awareness window displays were located at numerous local businesses.
A committee of volunteers, with the support of the MDH Fund Development Office, the Macomb Road Runners, and Western Illinois University’s Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, conducted the Tevar Run/Walk/Roll. For more information, contact the MDH Public Relations and Fund Development Office at 836-1557.
