MDH SPONSORS CANCER EDUCATION EXPO APRIL 22

McDonough District Hospital invites the public to attend the upcoming Cancer Education Expo, featuring a comprehensive array of cancer-related products, services, screenings, and information. The Cancer Education Expo is for people of all ages who would like to learn more about cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. The event will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 PM on Wednesday, April 22, at Fellheimer Auditorium, located on the campus of the Macomb Jr./Sr. High School, 1525 South Johnson Street in Macomb.

Health screenings will be offered at no cost, including ones for sun damage, bone density, and oral cancer. In addition, fecal occult blood test kits for the early detection of colon and rectal cancer will be distributed.

A special exhibit will allow participants to walk through a giant inflatable colon to learn about colorectal cancer. Prevent Cancer Foundation’s Super Colonä is an interactive educational tool traveling across America with the message that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable! This exhibit is sponsored by Illinois CancerCare in memory of Terry Mershon. Terry’s family designated memorial contributions for colon cancer education and awareness.

Physicians from the MDH Medical Staff will present information about various types of cancer. The schedule is as follows:
  • David Greathouse, DO, Internist of Lamoine Valley Clinic, will discuss colorectal cancer from 6:00 – 6:30 PM.
  • Troy Eckman, MD, OB/GYN of the Women’s Health Center of Macomb, will discuss cervical cancer from 6:30 – 7:00 PM.
  • Jerome Anderson, DO, Pathologist of  NuPath PC, will discuss skin cancer from 7:00 – 7:30 PM.
Participants at the expo will have the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of topics related to cancer and interact one-on-one with medical professionals from MDH. The following departments will host a booth at the expo: Advocacy Services, Anticoagulation Clinic, Behavioral Health Services, Cancer Registry, Home Health Care, Hospice, Laboratory, Nursing Services, Nutrition Services, Patient Financial Services, Radiology, Rehabilitation Services, and Wound/Ostomy Care Services.

In addition, there will be chair massages, Reflexology demonstrations, and an “Ask the Expert” booth which will feature medical professionals who will answer cancer related questions.

Other community organizations will also be on hand to discuss their services, including: American Cancer Society, Illinois Cancer Care, InterCommunity Radiation Center, Macomb Medical Equipment, Macomb Radiation Oncology Institute, McDonough County Health Department, Western Illinois Regional Council, and Western Illinois University (WIU) Campus Recreation and Thompson Hall, WIU Colleges Against Cancer student organization, and WIU Women’s Center.

The public is encouraged to attend this special event to learn more about cancer. There will also be refreshments, games, and door prizes.
