Located on the first floor of MDH.

obnurseswithbabyreduced.jpgThe Obstetrics Department is located on the east wing of first floor at MDH. Each year at McDonough District Hospital, nearly 400 babies are delivered in our family-centered maternity unit that combines labor, delivery, and recovery (LDR) rooms in a comfortable home-like setting. We have over 20 nurses on staff who have a combined 150 years of experience and all are trained in neonatal resuscitation, fetal monitoring, and CPR.

As a Level II Obstetrics Department, our highly trained and experienced staff provides 24-hour care before, during, and after the birth of a baby. They also provide post-operative care to women who have undergone some gynecological procedures.

MDH also offers a variety of childbirth and infant care classes to make each family member's experience the best that it can be.

Mothers have several pain control options for delivery, including epidurals, intrathecal, and local anesthetic. During labor and recovery, women may also choose to use the soothing whirlpool located in the department. For added peace of mind, the hospital installed an infant security system.

Your choice for a healthcare provider is an important decision and MDH is pleased to offer several options. Whether you choose an OB/GYN, a family practitioner, or a nurse midwife for prenatal care and delivery, you’re assured excellent, personal care. In addition, MDH has two board certified pediatricians on the medical staff who provide care for newborns through age 18.

Room Availability
The OB Department has three LDR rooms and 10 postpartum beds, with a bright and spacious nursery just steps away. In 2007, the Obstetrics department purchased two state-of-the-art birthing beds, specifically designed to serve the unique needs of birthing mothers, offering versatility, comfort, and support; in 2008 a third identical bed was purchased by the hospital. Funds raised from the 2006 Festival of Trees event helped to purchase the beds.

Before Dismissal
MDH goes above and beyond to ensure that mom and baby receive special care and attention before they go home. A lactation specialist visits new breast feeding mothers to make sure mother and baby are off to a good start. A hospital volunteer presents a book to mom from the Baby Talk program and discusses the importance of reading during the early years. Before dismissal, mom and baby receive a diaper bag, and a Boppy®, as well as a gift bag with snacks and a stuffed animal. As a service to our patients, the OB staff will call to check on mom and baby after they go home and offer home visits as needed.

Parents with small infants now have an additional option for bringing their most precious cargo home from the hospital. The Macomb Fire Department donated four Angel Guard Infant Car Beds to the OB Department. Designed for transporting small infants, particularly those weighing less than 5 pounds with special medical needs, the car beds are stored in OB and parents may rent them for up to one month.
safehaven-reduced.jpg Safe Haven Law
As a “hospital caring,” MDH is taking an active role in promoting awareness of the “Safe Haven” law. Signage at both entrances identifies the hospital as a location that allows a parent to safely and legally relinquish an unharmed newborn anonymously and without fear of prosecution.

From pregnancy through childbirth and beyond, MDH can provide you and your family with the care you need for a healthy beginning.
