Medical Explorers Learn About . . . Pharmacy

Kristi Green, Pharm.D., BCPS, Jason Williamson, R.Ph., and Marty Thurman, R.Ph., presented to the Medical Explorers on October 10. Kristi began the program with a tour of the Pharmacy Department, explaining it is the pharmacist’s job to fill prescription orders, as well as looking out for allergies and other reasons to fill or not fill the prescription as requested by the doctor. She talked to the students about classes to take as they finish high school and classes they will take in college. Kristi enjoys her career as a pharmacist and can’t picture herself doing anything else.

Jason talked to the Explorers about the computer technology used beginning with the doctor prescribing a medication, to when an order comes into the Pharmacy Department, how they fill the prescriptions, the checks and double checks for medication accuracy and safety, and how the medication is delivered to the patient.

The Explorers hands-on activity was to “fill a doctor’s order of prescriptions for a baby”.
