District Hospital opens, providing 104 acute-care beds.

A
26-room clinic opens, housing three physicians and one
dentist. |

A
radioisotope machine was purchased to aid in the diagnosis
of thyroid disease and metabolism. |
| 1964: |
Physical
Therapy Department opens. |
| 1965: |
Five
acres are purchased directly south of the hospital to
begin addition on the second and third floors, a new obstetrics
department and minor renovations in X-ray, pharmacy, and
outpatient services. |
| 1967: |
Third
floor construction is completed, increasing the hospitals
capacity to 151 beds. |
| 1968: |
Parking
lot is completed. |
| 1969: |
Construction
of the ICU and the second floor addition is completed,
bringing the hospitals bed capacity to 151 beds. |
| 1970: |
McDonough
County Blood Bank, Inc., is established. |
| 1971: |
Respiratory
Therapy Department opens. |
| 1973: |
Expansion
of Radiology and Laboratory is completed. MDH becomes
a trauma center with full-time physician coverage in the
Emergency Room and Ambulance Department. Helicopter transport
pad is readied for air transfers. |
| 1976: |
The
Health Services Building opens with 12 physicians renting
space. The building also houses offices for Gerontology
services, X-ray, and Laboratory facilities. |
| Mid-70s: |
New
technology comes to MDH. Electroencephalograms, or EEGs,
now being performed. Laboratory adds a nuclear gamma scintillation
camera, X-ray installs an ultrasound machine, and urodynamic
laboratory. Closed-circuit educational programming is
broadcast in every room. |
| 1977: |
Auxiliary
celebrates 20th anniversary. |
| 1978: |
Remodeling
projects include lobby area, gift shop, and business office.
Basement area is converted to offices for Fiscal Services,
Human Resources, Medical Library, Medical Records Department
and Auxiliary quarters. Pediatrics is redecorated and
Respiratory Therapy Department is remodeled. Gerontology
Department is established. |
| 1980: |
13,000
sq. ft. Emergency Room addition is completed. New facility
includes a poison information and treatment center, expanded
outpatient services, stress testing and paramedic program. |
| 1983: |
Computerized
Axial Tomography, or CT scanner, is added to Radiology,
and Echocardiography tests are now being performed. Groundbreaking
for the Modernization Program, Phase I, begins with the
expansion of Intensive Care Units and surgery. |
| 1984: |
MDH
Home Healthcare is introduced. |
| 1985: |
Modernization
Project is completed, adding 28,800 sq. ft. of space.
(The facility was intended not to increase beds, but
to meet state requirements and standards of the Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.) The construction
included space for a new surgical suite, anesthesia
and recovery, an Intensive Care Unit, physicians
reading room, Vascular Studies, and the departments
of Cardiopulmonary, Physical Therapy, Sterile Processing,
and Housekeeping. On May 19, a cornerstone laying ceremony
is held. A time capsule containing MDH memorabilia is
placed in the cornerstone.
Home
Healthcare introduces LIFELINE®, a home emergency
response system.

Gamma
camera purchased for Nuclear Medicine Department.
Radiology
introduces use of converted X-ray film/screen combination
to reduce radiation exposure.

| 1987: |
MDH
Addiction Recovery Center, an outpatient substance abuse
program, is opened. |
| 1988: |
Renovation
of Obstetrics/Nursery is completed. The renovations
include the addition of three Labor-Delivery-Recovery
rooms to combine the comfort of home with modern technology
during delivery.
Laboratory
receives Technicron RA-2XT, a computer directed chemical
system to improve accuracy and precision and the speed
of return of critical lab tests to patients.

Renovation
of Health Services Building I is completed and includes
the opening of the Womens Health Resource Center.

| 1990: |
Senior
Health Insurance Program, or S.H.I.P., arrives to help
seniors who have questions about Medicare and other
health insurance.
MDH
becomes a smoke-free facility.
Skilled
Nursing Facility opens for intermediary care of patients
who no longer require the constant care of a hospital
but may not be ready to return home

Laporoscopic
Laser is introduced to MDH, modernizing surgical procedures. |
| 1992: |
Hospital
Auxiliary celebrates 35 years of service. A new Mammography
Suite opens to provide personal care for women. |
| 1993: |
MDH
Auxiliary introduces Festival of Trees and
begins a two-year campaign called Seasons of Life.
Proceeds from the festival and all other events are
used to fund the expansions of the Recovery Center,
Home Health/Hospice and the Good Life Center for Wellness.
MDH
incorporates and joins the McDonough-Physician-Hospital
Organization (PHO) to facilitate managed care contracts.
Business
Office moves into basement of newly constructed Health
Services Building II.

Due
to growing patient volume in outpatient services, MDH
plans and completes renovation of several first floor
departments. Areas affected include: Admitting/Registration,
outpatient surgery, phase II recovery and surgery prep.
The Gift Shop, Cashier and Credit offices are relocated,
as well. Two handicapped-accessible rest rooms are opened
near the main entrance.
