About MDH
McDonough District Hospital is centered in Macomb, Illinois, home to Division 1 Western Illinois University and Spoon River Community College. Macomb offers area residents numerous cultural, academic, and recreational venues. With only a three-hour drive to St. Louis and twice daily Amtrak service to Chicago, Macomb residents have ready access to even larger metropolitan areas.
McDonough District Hospital has been a source of healing, caring, and hope since we first opened our doors to the people of western Illinois in 1958. Through the years, we have continually expanded our high quality services for people at all stages of their lives. Today, MDH has grown to become a 113-bed healthcare facility providing an impressive spectrum of advanced medical treatments and personalized health services. While our services have advanced, our commitment to providing healthcare in an atmosphere of compassion and caring has remained constant. Our doctors, nurses, and staff provide our patients and their families continuity of care, close to home—making McDonough District Hospital our communities' first choice in healthcare.
MDH is accredited by The Joint Commission and is a member of the Voluntary Hospitals of America, Inc., and the Illinois Hospital & Health Systems Association. MDH operates based on revenues from the people it serves and has not levied property taxes since the 1980's.
The MDH Team of Practitioners
The diversified skills of our medical team meet community needs. MDH has an active medical staff of more than 30 physicians, representing many specialties, including: Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, General/Vascular Surgery, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pathology, Pediatrics, Podiatry, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Urology.
MDH also has a hospitalist program. Primary care physicians have the option to refer their patients to our hospitalists—usually internal medicine or family practice physicians—for needed care during their hospital stays. Hospitalists are available during the day and on-call after hours. MDH hospitalists facilitate better healthcare for the entire community because primary care physicians are able to spend more uninterrupted time caring for office-based patients knowing their hospitalized patients are under expert supervision.
In addition to the active medical staff, there are several associated mid-level practitioners with advanced training who work closely with their supervising physicians to provide care to patients. In order to serve the wide range of healthcare needs of the MDH service region, several visiting specialists schedule appointments on a regular basis, including oncologists, cardiologists, neurologists, and an allergist.
MDH Services and Departments
A hospital wouldn’t be a hospital without the dedicated clinical and support staff who provide care on a daily basis to both inpatients and outpatients alike. Using a personalized approach, our team members make themselves available to answer questions and meet the needs of patients and their families.
The MDH advanced life support ambulance service and emergency room are staffed 24/7 with highly trained paramedics, nurses, and physicians who work together to provide transport, evaluation, and treatment to patients with varying levels of illness or injury. To expedite delivery of critically ill patients for treatment not provided by our hospital, helicopter transport service is available to a variety of tertiary centers in the region.
From general, urological, laser, obstetrical, and gynecological surgeries to ophthalmologic, orthopedic and vascular surgeries, MDH offers a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient surgeries. Our team uses the latest technology and techniques, and our patients can trust they are benefiting from high level of expertise rarely found in smaller hospitals.
MDH's clinical and support staff in the Obstetrics department provides family-friendly care for mother and baby during all phases of pregnancy, including a full range of childbirth and infant care classes. Our lactation specialists assist mothers who have questions or concerns with breastfeeding. The department provides 24-hour patient care to laboring women, pregnant women with obstetrical complications, and postpartum women and their newborns. MDH is also equipped to provide post-operative care to women who have undergone some gynecologic procedures.
MDH provides many high quality diagnostic services. From the Spiral CT scanner in the Radiology department, and the Vivid 7 in the Cardiopulmonary department that produces crystal clear images of the heart and blood vessels, to the chemistry analyzer in the Laboratory, and the Sleep Lab, MDH provides state-of-the-art technology and equipment that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of many illnesses. Mobile MRI and PET imaging systems are also available at MDH on a weekly basis.
MDH continues its dedication to patients outside the facility. Our Home Health Care and Hospice teams cover a multi-county area and offer in-home health services to acute, chronic, and terminally ill patients in need of nursing care or rehabilitation therapy. Partnering with cancer specialists, MDH provides on-site chemotherapy services. A radiation treatment center is conveniently located just west of the hospital, and a renal dialysis center is on the MDH south campus.
Inpatients and outpatients who require therapy as a result of injury, surgery, and disease are evaluated and treated in the Rehabilitation Services department. The professional staff offers pediatric to geriatric services in the hospital and an outpatient clinic. Services include: physical and occupational therapy, industrial rehabilitation, cardiac and pulmonary rehab, sports medicine, and speech/language pathology.
Not all ailments are physical in nature. The professional counseling staff in MDH's Behavioral Health Services department offers individual, group, and family therapy. Our team takes a patient-focused approach to those in need of mental health services.
Promoting the health and wellness of our entire service area is also an important part of MDH's role. Outreach Services provides a full spectrum of programs and services, including screenings for cancer, stroke, and osteoporosis; blood pressure and blood glucose testing; weight management, CPR and first aid classes; an anticoagulation clinic; support services for caregivers and individuals with Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders; as well as assessment and treatment of patients with wound, ostomy, or continence conditions. An Upcoming Events calendar featuring outreach events is available on our website.
Dietitians, nurses, and educators at the Diabetes Education Center provide individualized consultations and teach self-management skills that help prevent long-term complications. Day Health Services offers health-related services and social activities for seniors so they are better able to function independently in their own home or with their families.
In addition to the many clinical and outreach services, MDH offers a number of amenities and support services for patients and visitors, including Advocacy Services to assist patients and their family with financial, social, and emotional issues during the hospital stay and upon discharge; the Larry T. Westervelt Home for family and friends needing short term accommodations close to the hospital; the Pendell Garden is a nice place to relax and enjoy the outdoors; and The Gift Gallery where visitors may purchase a number of gift items and sundries, including fresh flowers, cards, jewelry, stuffed animals, magazines, and snacks. Located on the lower level of the hospital, the Coin Cafe' is a vending and dining area that provides food and beverages 24 hours a day. Wireless Internet is available throughout the hospital.
The mission of McDonough District Hospital is to provide health services with a personal approach to care that enhances the quality of life for our patients. We provide more than hospital care...we are a hospital caring.
