William "Bill" Akers

Congratulations to William "Bill" Akers, Jr, Paramedic in Ambulance Services, on being named the recipient of the MDH APPLE Award for June 2007. APPLE stands for "Achieving outstanding Performance in Patient care, Leadership, Loyalty and Enthusiasm for MDH."
Bill began his employment on November 16, 1981 as an EMT for Ambulance Services. Bill continued his education and then began working as a Paramedic on January 24, 1982. He has great critical thinking skills and outstanding paramedic skills. He is able to make adjustments to workload and to each emergency situation very easily.
Bill is dependable and takes everything in stride. He performs his duties admirably and is always very caring and compassionate. He communicates clearly and accurately. Bill has great interpersonal skills and relates well with co-workers, patients, and the public. His major strength is his ability to relate with people. He is very motivated and tries to find things to stay busy at all times.
Bill has many positive attributes and is a valuable member of the Emergency Services team. He maintains a high level of clinical expertise and is supportive of the department's overall mission of treating patients to the best of his ability in a caring manner. Bill has earned the trust and confidence of medical staff and is well respected by his peers. His interpersonal skills allow him to work well and get along with everyone in the department. Additionally, Bill always puts patients first and is readily available and motivated to attend to their needs. His peers consistently praise Bill for his response.
His nominator states Bill is an exceptional medic. His assessments and reports on patients are precise and very informative. Bill is someone you definitely want around in a sticky situation. He is calm and collected in any emergency. Patients love him, and he treats everyone with kindness and respect. The nominator continues by stating that when people come into work in the morning and see Bill is on duty, they know it is going to be a good day. Even when the department is extremely busy, he is always a team player, and things just run smoother with him around. He shares his experience and knowledge with new and less seasoned staff enthusiastically, and he is an integral part of the Emergency Services family.
Even after working here over 25 years, Bill still remains very unassuming and humble. No job is too small or too great for him. "In a true emergency, Bill Akers is the person you want. He is a knowledgeable, kind, and compassionate co-worker."
Bill, and his wife, Kathy, enjoy horseback riding on trail rides in their spare time.
