Congratulations to...Susan Brown, Registered Nurse in Home Health, on being named the recipient of the MDH APPLE Award for January 2008. APPLE stands for "Achieving outstanding Performance in Patient care, Leadership, Loyalty and Enthusiasm for MDH."
Susan began her employment at MDH on June 1, 2001, as a Registered Nurse in Surgical Services. On September 20, 2004, Susan began working as a nurse for Home Health. Susan is an advisor and educator who is very helpful to students nurses and new staff members. She generates very good ideas and has developed new teaching tools. She attentively listens, has excellent evaluation skills, and is easy to approach and talk to.
Susan happily takes on extra responsibilities and shifts to help others. Susan is a strong team player who carries a heavy load without complaint. She takes ownership of her work, is detailed oriented, and has excellent clinical skills. Susan is always mindful of customer satisfaction. She remains positive and calm in any situation and instills confidence in her patients. She loves her job and remains very enthusiastic. Her cheerful, humorous personality rubs off on others.
Susan's patients repeatedly comment on her excellence. She does the extra things that make her patients feel comfortable. Her patients are well cared for and feel more at ease when Susan is managing their care. Susan knows the habits of her patients and family members and is attentive to the needs of not only the patient, but of all the family and caregivers of the patient. She is an advocate for her patients.
Her nominator states "Do not let Susan ever get away! She knows her job and is an extraordinary nurse. She is very knowledgeable and caring and is truly a wonderful, skilled nurse." A patient also explains that they couldn't have been more pleased with her care. She was "so considerate, helpful, cheerful, concerned, pleasant, and kept trying to find ways to make me heal more comfortably and completely."
In her spare time, Susan enjoys spending time with her family and attending her children's activities. She enjoys fishing and is also a very good artist.
